How Do I Become A Member?

You can gain membership in the Institute through:

1. MICPA-ICAA Programme

You must complete the MICPA-ICAA Programme and gain at least 3 years of relevant practical training experience.

Approved Practical Experience
Work experience forms an integral part of the MICPA-ICAA programme process. However, there is no standard model for the work experience to be given to every student. It varies from student to student and from office to office.

There are two routes of training leading to the CPA qualification, both of which require you to complete the same examinations, and a period of practical training.

Stream I

Stream I is the traditional route of training where you will work in the office of a CPA in public practice under a training contract. You will gain experience in a wide range of services, exposing you to a great variety of clients. Your service will be highly valued by all types of organisations.

Stream II

Stream II is where candidates may undertake the MICPA-ICAA Programme whilst employed outside public practice, by an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) under the supervision of a member of MICPA or recognised professional body. Candidates are not required to enter into a training contract but must maintain a training log book as a record of their practical experience.


As a general guide, the following categories of experience are held to be fundamental to the work of professional accountants.

Financial Accounting Financial Management
Auditing Insolvency
General Practice Treasury
Management Accounting Information Systems Consultancy
Taxation Comparable Sub-divisions of Accounting

All potential CPAs under the MICPA-ICAA programme are required to obtain not less than 3 years of approved practical experience.

Application For Membership
An application for admission as a member of the Institute shall be made not more than twelve months after whichever is the later of:

  • the date on which a registered student is notified that he has passed all of the examinations of the Institute for which exemption has not been granted; and
  • the date of completion of 3-year approved practical experience.

Complete the application form and submit to the Institute with supporting documents and appropriate fees.


2. Recognition of Memberships

As a full member in good standing of the approved accounting bodies, you can apply for membership of the Institute by undertaking the Institute’s admitting examination under bye-law 34(1)(f):

Application for Membership
Applicants must complete the application form and provide the following documents, accompanied by appropriate fees:

  • Membership certificate(s) or a letter from the accountancy body/ bodies confirming the date(s) of admission to membership.
  • University degree(s) or other academic diploma.
  • Testimonial(s) from employer(s) indicating in full details the position(s) held, duration in each position, job functions and seniority in the organisation(s).

All photocopies of submitted documents must be certified true by the referee who is a member of MICPA or your current employer. For applicants who sat for the MICPA Admitting Examination, a certified copy of the examination results transcripts must also be enclosed.
