View Symposium Brochure

Another accomplishment of the Young CPA Group with the official opening of Young CPA Symposium by Dato' Nordin Baharuddin, the President of the Institute on August 6, 2008.

The Symposium's theme "Charting the Future of Accounting and Finance Professionals" provides an insight into some of the key global trends affecting the accounting and finance profession and evolving career paths and emerging issues in the years to come.

The main objective is to provide young accounting and finance professionals with critical understanding of the changing financial regulatory landscape and emerging trends across the profession, helping them to capitalise on their career development opportunities.

In his keynote address, Dato' Nordin Baharuddin stressed the need to uphold integrity, competence and objectivity, facilitate entrepreneurship, create value, manage risk and rationalise complexity for the future professional accountants.

Earlier, En Abdul Halim Md Lassim, the Chairman of Young CPA Group in his opening remarks, reiterated that the increasing important soft skills as business professionals progressively march into management positions. Business professionals must have the ability to learn, relearn and unlearn.

En Abdul Halim also outlined the activities of the Young CPA Group since its inception.

The Symposium started with a presentation by Mr Ong Ching Chuan, partner of PwC, to reflect the financial regulatory reform and corporate failures which provide a basis for the transformative role of the finance functions. He deliberated on how the changing external business environments have a direct impact on the role and career aspirations of accounting and finance professionals.

His presentation was complemented by a presentation from Mr Kok Ghee, Senior Manager of JobStreet.com on a recent survey of the employment trends across accounting & finance profession. His presentation helped to provide insights on the specialities and skills in demand and current recruitment & retention strategies of the organisations in response to the changes in the business environment.

Two prominent CPA members - Ms Soh Eng Hooi and En Mohd Muazzam also have shared their journey and experience in working abroad.

The event, which was held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre, KL, was attended by 70 participants. When approached for comments, most participants agreed that the event was both timely and relevant, in view of the changing business environment and the need to address the challenges with the relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes.
